“If I could leave 10 stars I would. As a Military Veteran and retired Police Officer this was such an incredible experience. Not only did I learn so much from Bracal and Kelly, but I experienced a lot through the animals. The healing effect I experienced was monumental, I left feeling like a completely different person. Through certain obstacles that challenged my thought process shined new light on the growth of the hardened mentality.”
"This is such a clean space! The animals were all very loving and gentle with me and my son and from what I saw, the rest of those that visited. They have goats, chickens, ducks, mules, donkeys, horses, cows and more. My son loved the birds, especially the goats and the great white beautiful turkey.
FIVE STARS!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Make sure to ask for the names of their animals! They have such a variety of names for them it is entertaining to see how the names match the animal lol!
We went for donkeys and donuts!"
"Meeting Bracal has been the ultimate gift in my life!!! The animals that she surrounds herself with are nothing short of miracle workers."
"Animals are amazing healers, they are extensions of their humans. I am so grateful for Bracal and her crew. I highly recommend you check out her new opportunities to heal and experience a whole new level of freedom.
"Working with Bracal and one of her beautiful horses, Mojo allowed us to learn new insights about our relationship that we can work on together over time."

Hooves 4 Healing Heroes is located in Northern Maine. The New Sweden farm is easily accessed from anywhere in Aroostook County and a short day trip from outside the immediate area. The 100 acres offers a peaceful sanctuary for healing. Equine Assisted Learning is a hands on opportunity to work through trauma, reintegration, and family issues with an equine the natural healer as your guide.
The utilization of EAP/EAL has been proven to be beneficial with this population as demonstrated by the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs support of equine assisted therapy as part of a Whole Health Program. Additionally, new research shows equine therapy—a treatment method that uses the connection between people and horses to enhance emotional healing—can jump-start the healing process for veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry was conducted by Drs. Yuval Neria and Prudence Fisher, principal investigators of the Man O’ War Project at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
The 6 week course is a closed group of 6 service men/women who will be working directly with the equines. The following is the breakdown of the 6 week curriculum:

3. Haltering and ground ties
4. O.K. Guidance (getting over it, under it or through it)

I was not born on the farm. Everything I have learned has been through trial and error and calling my "life-lines" during the past 5 years of equine ownership. I know the excitement, drive and intimidation of taking this on and am happy to spend time with you in a 1:1 session designed for you and your specific needs.
What? You have never heard about Equine Activities? Well you are in luck because Aroostook County has a farm in New Swede, Maine that offers this rare opportunity to get outside, handle a horse, donkey or mule and have fun with your family while learning a few things about yourself and each other.
Activities with the horses and observation of their behavior provide the basis for reflection and discussion. These activities and discussions improve confidence, self-assurance, verbal and non-verbal communication, focus, mindfulness, and coping strategies.
Anyone looking to build stronger relationships or to have fun with friends in this hands on experiential learning approach.

Equine-assisted work honors the natural behavior of horses and herds. Horses are skilled at keeping themselves safe and adept at survival; their natural behaviors are optimal for mental and physical health. In many respects, humans have lost the instinct to keep themselves safe and healthy. We entrust horses to show us the way back to health. Work and observation in the horse world lends itself to extremely powerful metaphors into our own patterns, strengths, and the nonverbal messages we send out. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy implements the power of equine-assisted principles and exercises to introduce therapy clients to themselves in a modality that has been found to be more efficient and less threatening than traditional talk therapy. Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is a field of practice based on the successes of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. We have learned that everyone can benefit from equine-assisted work - not just therapy clients. EAL uses equine-assisted principles and exercises in a variety of "arenas" from corporate retreats, to church groups, personal coaching, parenting and family dynamics and more! https://okcorralseries.com/about
While many equine facilities offer "therapeutic" services without being certified, at A Better Day Counseling and Farms, we believe it is best practice to be certified, licensed and trained. Bracal is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor licensed to practice in the state of Maine and has certification in both Animal Assisted Therapies and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. Kelly is certified in Equine Assisted Learning.
Our first priority is the safety of all parties. Some activities may not be suitable for children that require constant supervision but other activities can accommodate younger children with parental supervision such as farm visits. Not sure? Give us a call.
We do not ride our animals. All of our herd are rescues and come with their own trauma and health backgrounds. We believe that there is as much, if not more benefit to working with the animals from the ground. Ground work requires self-awareness, partnership and joining with the animal.
We do offer mental health counseling for adults and children ages 12 and over. At this time we have a waitlist. For more information contact the office.
We are not a rescue. However, we do adopt from rescues for our program. All of our herd has been adopted, with the exception of Boss who was born here after his mom was rescued.
We rely on natural horse behavior to teach us how we have lost our way. Horses are herd animals but when offered a treat their natural way is replaced with pack mentality. "Every wolf in a wolf pack has a place in the pecking order, and they have a very strong leader. Herds have no such hierarchy, and are led by the will of the majority. For example, a pack attacks an animal based on a decision of the leader. A herd flees from a predator, instinctually, and all at once". Its the natural herd principles that guide EAP/EAL.
My husband and I met and married in Alaska in 2010. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor from California’s Bay Area and he was an underground miner from South Dakota where he grew up on the family farm that was homesteaded in the 1800’s. We moved to New Sweden, Maine from Alaska in 2018, after I fell in love our 100-acre farm and old farm house. Being a “city kid” raised outside of San Francisco, it was my dream to one day own a farm. We quickly started adding animals, first a few bottle calves, chickens, goats and then two rescue miniature donkeys.
It was during a walk with the donkeys on the property that the inception of A Better Day Counseling and Farms came to be. It was a powerful moment for both my husband and I as we realized the healing power of what we were experiencing. Initially, we started by opening my mental health practice on the property. As we began to witness the transformative power that the farm brought to clients, we gradually began adding more programs.
Today we are both certified in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy/Learning through the O.K. Corral. We have a herd of 12 rescues, a combination of horses, donkeys and mules. We are a non-riding program that utilizes the powerful equine-human bond to help participants transform their lives. We are continuously humbled by being allowed to facilitate and witness the journeys of healing both our rescues and the participants experience when brought together
We love to hear from you. Email or call us, and we will get back to you soon.
